storage tips

Packing Your Trailer / Container / Locker

  • Place pallets or plastic on the floor.
  • Place frequently retrieved items near the door for easy access.  An isle could be left in a storage locker; this is not recommended for trailers or containers.
  • Pack to within 6-9 inches of the ceiling>  Brace items that move in transit.
  • Place valuables at the front of units (away from the door).
  • Make an inventory of your stored items and keep in a safe place.
  • Drain any gas/oil from lawn mowers, power tools, etc.  There is a list of prohibited items on the back of your lease.  Moving and storage of any combustibles such as solvents, gas, paints, etc. is STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
  • Use uniform-size boxes for easy stacking.  Stack lighter boxes and boxes marked "fragile" on top of heavier boxes.  Western Storage has boxes for sale.
  • Stack mirrors and pictures on their end.
Furniture
  • Apply heavy coat of furniture polish before storing wood items.
  • Cover with old sheets or blankets rather than plastic.  Moving blankets are available for sale from Western Storage.
  • Store couches on end where possible to save space.  Use a pallet, or plastic, or moving blankets.  Wrap cushions in plastic.
  • Prop mattresses on end so they stand straight.
  • Cover all other goods to protect from dust, mould, etc.
Bicycles or Metal Objects
  • Wipe all metal objects with an oily rag before storing to prevent rust.
  • Keep a small box of tools handy for dismantling or re-assembly.
Boxes
  • Completely fill all boxes.  If not completely full, use crumpled paper or styrofoam chips to fill to the top.
  • Pack heavy items in small boxes.
  • Seal boxes with packing tape; available for purchase at Western Storage.
  • Label boxes and keep a list of contents in a safe place away from the storage area.
